Forecast Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO)
Forecast Informed Reservoir Operations is an innovative approach to assisting in reservoir operations by integrating enhanced monitoring and improved weather forecasting techniques to help guide decisions on whether to retain or release water from basins. It is currently being developed and tested in several locations throughout California including:
- Russian River Basin (Lake Mendocino, Lake Sonoma)
- Santa Ana River Basin (Prado Dam, Seven Oaks Dam)
- Yuba-Feather River Basins and Green River (Howard Hanson Dam)
The Seven Oaks FIRO Steering Committee is stewarding the studies on using FIRO at the local Seven Oaks Dam to optimize operations, improve water conservation, and manage flood risks. The overarching goal of FIRO is to develop, demonstrate, and implement tools to enable more effective reservoir management by leveraging improvements in weather and water forecasts.
